Senate OKs sanctions for Syria
WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 (UPI) -- The U.S. Congress has moved to give President Bush the authority to place economic and political sanctions on Syria.
The Senate approved a bill Tuesday allowing the president to sanction Syria for its sponsorship of terrorist groups, military occupation of Lebanon and stockpiling of weapons of mass destruction.
The House is expected to approve the bill in the coming weeks.
U.S. conservatives, particularly far-right supporters of Israel, have been the driving force behind the bill.
Supporters say Syria -- which the State Department lists as a state sponsor of terrorism -- is a major threat to U.S. strategic interests in the region. But many analysts point out the threat is not direct, instead linked primarily to the country's support of terrorists and stockpiling of weapons of mass destruction.
Although the final bill is expected to be signed into law by President Bush, it is considered unlikely the administration is interested in taking such actions now.
