Leader: Terrorist operating under US eyes in Iraq Tehran, Aug 19, IRNA Iran-Iraq-Leader
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei here Friday said the US was the prime suspect in the case of insecurity in Iraq and that terrorists were operating under the US eyes there.
Addressing a huge crowd of Muslim worshipers at the Friday prayers sermons here, the Leader said, "We are deeply upset by the insecurity that is prevailing in Iraq and taking tolls from among the miserable Iraqi people.
"Killing innocent people is a big crime and it does not matter who commits the crime. The US machine guns are guilty and so are those who plant bombs.
"We consider the US as the prime suspect in these events because terrorism in Iraq is taking place under the watchful eyes of the Americans. Thousands of military, security, political and intelligence US forces are spread all over Iraq today. If they want to eliminate insecurity in Iraq, they can do this." The Leader further said that some even believe the killings are carried out by the US and Zionist intelligence services.
"It is not unlikely and there is evidence, too. Insecurity is a prelude to occupation. They can justify their (continued) presence due to the insecurity there," said the Leader.
"They (the Americans) wanted to bring to power their own subservient government - a government that would serve the people in appearance but act like a US mercenary in reality." The Leader said the Americans are officially interfering in drawing up the Iraqi constitutional law. "What does it have to do with you?" Ayatollah Khamenei said the US has been defeated in Iraq and there is no doubt about it.
The Leader said that people's hatred toward the US is increasing and no one is more despised than George W. Bush in Iraq today.
Referring to the opposition to the US interference in Iraq, the Leader said protests against the US administration due to its military interference is on the rise and an opinion poll held last week showed that most Americans are against the US interference and presence in Iraq.
Turning to allegations against Iran and Syria, Ayatollah Khamenei said, "Terrorists are moving under the watchful eyes of the US and are perhaps moved from here to there with their own assistance. We have information about this. And then they level unsubstantiated accusations against Iran or Syria.
"Today, we have a 1,300-km joint border with Iraq and occasional cases of illegal crossing may occur," said the Leader, adding, "The security of Iraq is our security and its progress is a huge achievement." The Supreme Leader then touched on the government of Iraq saying, "We support the Iraqi government which is a popular one. The Iraqi nation are our Muslim brethren.
"The present government has come to office with the vote of the people, something unprecedented in the history of Iraq. The Iraqi people had never had the chance to elect a head of government before." The Supreme Leader said the Iraqi people have never been present in the scene. This is the first popular government taking the reins of power in the country. "This is not what the US wanted." He said: "The Iraqi nation, the progressive clergy and religious authorities wanted this, and thanks God, this happened." The Leader said the Iranian nation wish prosperity, development and security for Iraq.
The leader's speech was interrupted several times by the worshipers who supported the Leader's statements by shouting "God is the Greatest" and "Death to America".
