Anti-fence protest near Jerusalem
JPost.com Staff Jun. 26, 2004

Several hundreds of Palestinian, Israelis and internationals clashed with border policemen during a demonstration against the construction of the West Bank security fence in the village of A-Ram, on the northern outskirts of Jerusalem.

Demonstrators threw stones at the security forces deployed at the A-Ram checkpoint, Army Radio reported.

Six people were arrested, including an Israeli demonstrator who reportedly threw an axe at security forces.

Israeli border police used rubber bullets and water cannons to disperse the crowd causing dozens of people to suffer from tear gas inhalation, including MK Ahmed Tibi (Hadash). A news photographer was severely beaten, and Israeli police said nine people were arrested.

Most residents of the A-Ram area are Jerusalem residents who left the city to escape overcrowding. A-Ram Mayor Sarhan Salaima said about 3,000 people, including 100 foreign or Israeli activists, participated in Saturday's demonstration.

TV footage showed riot police pushing protesters to the ground. Witnesses said undercover police also moved into the area, beating protesters.

Police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby confirmed that force was used in the demonstration, but said it was in reaction to the throwing of an ax, hammers and stones and after rioters had demolished security cameras in the area.

Gush Shalom representatives, invited by A-Ram mayor Sarhan Salaima were present at the demonstration, and a press release by the organization said a petition by residents is to be brought before the High Court on Monday as a result of the destruction by army bulldozers of the A-Ram – Jerusalem main road.

The petition claims that the planned security barrier – a 5-meter high wall, at this point – separates A-Ram, Beit Hanina and Dahiyat el-Barid, which over the years have become a single urban unit, residents of which 60% hold Israeli ID cards.
