Israeli barrier is obstacle to two-state solution, EU envoy tells Arafat
02 October 2003
Progress towards a two-state solution is being hindered by Israel's construction of a vast security barrier in and around the West Bank, the European Union's Middle East envoy told Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat Thursday.
Belgian diplomat Marc Otte met Arafat at his West Bank headquarters in Ramallah and reassured him of Europe's opposition to Israel's continued construction of the barrier, Arafat's media advisor Nabil Abu Rudeina told AFP.
"The European envoy confirmed the European position that the security wall is an obstacle to arriving at a two-state solution," he said.
Israel says the vast security barrier, which loosely follows the 1967 Green Line division between Israel and the West Bank, but also dips deep into Palestinian territory, is a necesary move to keep out suicide bombers.
But the Palestinians see the barrier as an attempt to pre-empt the boundaries of any future two-state settlement.
Otte also told Arafat the EU would continue to work for the implementation of the Mideast peace roadmap and to support the peace process.
For his part, Arafat updated the envoy about the situation in the Palestinian territories and Israel's "continuing violations against the Palestinian people and the leadership."
