Posted on Fri, May. 21, 2004 Rothschilds continue support for CSU arts
Every now and then I try to clean out my e-mail file and I discover stuff that I'd been saving. And it looks like this is the week to share this information.
New Guinea exhibit
Benno and Babette Rothschild of Columbus collected art from New Guinea for some time and donated 172 pieces to Columbus State University earlier this spring.
When the art department moves downtown in a couple of years, the new facility will have a specially designed display space for the Benno and Babette Rothschild New Guinea Art Collection. The collection includes 20th century handmade figurines, accessories, instruments and masks.
"We are very grateful for this gift because it will be a very visible and valuable teaching tool for our students and the community," said department chair Jeff Burden. "We are eager to have a permanent collection space but in the meantime we will display different pieces of the collection at different times on campus."
Several of the pieces may be seen as early as this summer as part of a public exhibit.
Besides the art pieces, the Rothschilds also donated research papers and books.
"The Rothschild family has played a major role in the development of Columbus State since its founding in 1958 and we greatly appreciate their support," said Rexford Whiddon, director of major gifts.
Jac. H. Rothschild, father of Benno Rothschild, was an original steering committee member who worked with President Thomas Whitley to create the Columbus College Foundation. The former fabric manufacturer is noted for his committee role and 10-year dedication to acquiring funds.
