CAPITOL HILL The U-S Senate voted 95-to-one last night to extend the Patriot Act. Congress extends Patriot Act for another five weeks
It will give negotiators more time to reach a deal on new provisions to protect civil liberties. Sixteen provisions were set to expire today. They're getting a five-week extension.
New Hampshire Senator John Sununu one of the few Republicans who joined Democrats in holding up permanent extension of the law in December by pressing more civil liberties protections.
Sununu says the opposition centers on provisions that give people little chance to go to court to challenge searches of personal and business documents from medical and financial records to library lending lists.
Wisconsin Democrat Russ Feingold, who says the act imposes on civil liberties, cast the sole vote against the extension.
The House approved it Wednesday.
