Security Threat Drops to Yellow

WASHINGTON -- Ten days after it had raised the nation's security alert level, the Bush administration brought it down a notch today, returning it to Code Yellow, the middle step on the five-step scale.

"The intelligence community has concluded the number of indicators and warnings that led to raising the threat level have decreased, and the heightened vulnerability associated with the Memorial Day holiday has passed," Brian Roehrkasse, a spokesman for the Department of Homeland Security, said, according to the Associated Press.

The threat level had been placed at orange, reflecting increased concern that a terrorist strike might be attempted in the period surrounding last weekend's Memorial Day holiday.

The top level is red; orange equates to a high risk of an attack, and yellow stands for an elevated risk. The system was begun in March, 2002. Since then, only levels listed as orange and yellow have been put into operation.

The Department of Homeland Security, in declaring the nation at high risk of attack 10 days ago, said at the time that in the wakes of terrorist bombings in Saudi Arabia and Morocco, "the U.S. intelligence community believes that Al Qaeda has entered an operational period worldwide, and this may include attacks in the United States."

There were no reports of attempted terrorist strikes during the most recent period of heightened security concerns.
