On Thursday, a day after Air France cancelled six flights between Paris and Los Angeles at U.S. urging, officials said terrorists may be seeking a repeat of the September 11, 2001, attacks that killed about 3,000 people. The Post said on Friday U.S. officials noted a flight from Paris to Los Angeles would cross Hudson Bay and eastern Canada before entering U.S. airspace over Minnesota and then swing southwest toward Southern California. Since the routes flown by commercial airliners are closely monitored and deviations quickly checked, a hijacked flight from Paris to Los Angeles would have relatively few large populated centres to attack. "The only big city near this route is Las Vegas, which they would consider a nice, attractive target," the Post quoted an unidentified government official as saying. A French Interior Ministry spokesman said nine people booked on Air France's cancelled Christmas Eve flight AF 068 had been questioned and released without being charged. Four were U.S. nationals, two German, one Algerian, one French and one Belgian, the spokesman said. An Air France spokeswoman said normal service between Paris and Los Angeles would resume on Friday. French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin, opting for caution, cancelled the flights on Wednesday and Thursday even though French checks found no links to radical groups among any of the scheduled passengers, a source close to French investigating judges dealing with terrorism told Reuters.
