Joshua Gracin just became the most famous singing Marine on TV since Gomer Pyle.
On Wednesday, viewers of Fox's American Idol chose Gracin, 22, a lance corporal from Westland, Mich., and Corey Clark, 22, a stagehand from Nashville, as the next two of an eventual 10 semifinalists.
Gracin, stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif., sang Edwin McCain's I'll Be. Clark sang Journey's Foolish Heart.
But unlike Pyle, don't expect to see Gracin on the show in uniform. ''He's competing as an individual who is a Marine, not as an official representative,'' Marine Corps spokeswoman Capt. Shawn Hainey says.
Gracin is not exempt from deployments, but his unit, the 1st Maintenance Battalion, ''is not scheduled at this point to go anywhere,'' Hainey says.
