Filmmaker takes umbrage with Bush's press `shills' By Dave Wedge Wednesday, July 28, 2004
Frumpy filmmaker Michael Moore ripped into the ``national media'' as ``shills'' for President Bush [related, bio] and called on Sen. John Kerry [related, bio] to ``stand up'' for his convictions during a fiery speech to progressive liberals. ``(Kerry) will not win this election by being weak-kneed and wimpy,'' Moore bellowed, eliciting wild cheers and applause. ``The only way that will happen is to stand up forthrightly and say what you believe.'' Hundreds jammed a ballroom at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge to hear Moore and former Vermont governor and presidential candidate Howard Dean [related, bio] speak of the urgency for Democrats to take back the White House. Both firmly threw their support behind Kerry, with Moore defending the senator's vote in favor of the Iraq war. ``John Kerry did what 70 to 80 percent of Americans did - he believed (Bush),'' Moore said, noting that Kerry, like many, changed his opinion as facts surfaced. Moore also blasted the ``corporate media,'' chastising networks as ``cheerleaders'' for the Bush administration who ``fell asleep on the job'' while reporting on the war. He sometimes contradicted himself though, at one point blaming Fox News for failing to portray anti-war sentiments, but later relaying how the network aired a segment of NASCAR champ Dale Earnhardt Jr. urging all Americans to see Moore's controversial film, ``Fahrenheit 9/11.'' He also revealed that the Carlyle Group of Saudi investors slammed in the film holds a 17 percent stake in Euro Disney, and questioned whether that is why Disney refused to distribute his acclaimed documentary.
