LONDON -
The U.S. dollar hit a record low against the euro and a 26-year low against the British pound in European trading Wednesday before regaining ground. Gold rose.
The euro reached $1.3833 in early European trading, beating the previous record of $1.3813 set on July 13. Later, in midday trading in New York, the euro fetched $1.3809, still higher than its level of $1.3784 late Tuesday.
Other dollar rates in Europe, compared with late Tuesday, included 121.79 Japanese yen, down from 122.38; 1.1987 Swiss francs, down from 1.2032; and 1.0426 Canadian dollars, down from 1.0433.
The British pound traded at $2.0542, up from $2.0461. Earlier in the day, sterling peaked at $2.0548.
In midday New York trading, the dollar bought 121.87 yen and 1.1996 Swiss francs, while the pound was worth $2.0530.
Gold traded in London at $671.60 per troy ounce, up from $663.15 late Tuesday. In Zurich, gold traded at $670.35 per troy ounce, up from $661.10. Gold rose $3.40 in Hong Kong to $668.35.
Silver opened in London at $13.14 per troy ounce, up from $12.93.
