By Tirdad Derakhshani Inquirer Staff Writer
Former Enron CEO Jeffrey Skilling has been accused of being a crook - he's charged with fraud, insider trading, and other crimes in the massive collapse of his company.
Now he's also being labeled an "emotionally disturbed person." That's how New York cops reportedly described Skilling after picking him up at 4 a.m. yesterday at Park Avenue and East 73d Street and taking him to New York Presbyterian Hospital for observation.
Skilling spent the evening in two Manhattan bars, American Trash and the Voodoo Lounge, where he allegedly ran up to patrons, pulled open their clothes, and accused them of being FBI agents.
"He was shouting at them: 'You're an FBI agent and you're following me'," a police source told the Associated Press.
Police said Skilling was intoxicated and highly uncooperative when they approached him, but they did not charge him with a crime. Messages left for Skilling's lawyers were not immediately returned. Hospital officials would say only that Skilling had been discharged from the hospital yesterday.
Life imitating, uh, art?
• He's not just a multimillionaire movie star turned populist Republican governor. No, the Govinator is an actual superhero. According to Access Hollywood, Arnold Schwarzenegger saved a man's life this week by fishing him out of the water off Maui in Hawaii. Schwarzenegger, who was swimming with his wife, Maria Shriver, saw a swimmer who was having trouble breathing. When the guy told him he was not OK, Schwarzenegger grabbed a boogie board, and while treading water, picked him up, put him on the board, and took him back to shore. The man is doing fine.
Complications for Lavigne
• "Sk8er Boi" singer Avril Lavigne has had to deal with a stalker boi. Seattle police say they arrested James Speedy, 30, for allegedly stalking the 19-year-old punky Canadian singer. Authorities say they've been investigating Speedy since last summer, when they were contacted by Ontario, Canada, police about harassing letters and e-mails sent to Lavigne. On Wednesday, when Speedy was arrested, Lavigne played a free concert at a mall south of Seattle.
Kutcher and Moore to wed?
• For what it's worth, rumors that Bruce Willis' ex-wife, Demi Moore, is going to wed Punk'd host Ashton Kutcher have been circulating for months. Now Star magazine maintains the couple are definitely going to tie the knot in June. It also says they spent Passover this week at a Kabbalah retreat, because, like Madonna, Demi is way into the Americanized New Age version of the Jewish mystical tradition so hot with rich and famous spiritual consumers.
Meanwhile, Willis' reps tell the New York Daily News that rumors that Willis, 49, popped the question to his gal, Brooke Burns, 26, are totally not true.
Manson pops the Q
• Shock rocker Marilyn Manson's circus show of a life is taking a new turn, as Us Weekly reports that the self-described "Anti-Christ Superstar" has proposed to his girlfriend, the "burlesque artist" Dita Von Teese (gee, could that be a stage name?). The shocking part, Associated Press tells us, is that the leather-and-lipstick-loving dude did it the traditional way: Rather than pour a bucket of blood on the gal, he got down on one knee and gave her a seven-carat, round-cut diamond. Expect nuptials within a year.
Actresses rock out
• Columnist Liz Smith has some surprising info: Sharon Stone is trying her hand at songwriting. The 46-year-old actress says she's already sold some of her songs to a major movie studio and a pop star.
The singing bug isn't confined to just one screen siren. Gina Gershon, whose last flick, Prey for Rock & Roll, was about an aging punk singer, has taken her fictional movie band through the looking glass: The Showgirls hottie went on a real concert tour with the bandGirls Against Boys. The band's tour adventures will be broadcast in Rocked With Gina Gershon, a six-part reality series that premiered last night on IFC. That's movie-to-real-life-to-reality-TV. Got it?
Trump update
• We are truly mystified that Donald Trump has become such a mondo TV phenom. Why, dear readers, do you love him so?
While you puzzle over that one, here's an update on the Donald's ratings-winner of a show on NBC. On Thursday night's episode of The Apprentice - the season's penultimate show - the Wharton alum fired two more people: Nick Warnock and Amy Henry, who have admitted they had a fling during the taping. That leaves Bill Rancic and Kwame Jackson to duke it out on next week's live two-hour finale. The winner will have to endure a continued relationship with the Donald as a $250,000-a-year Trump company serf.
