BAGHDAD, Iraq -- The death toll among Iraqi civilians in insurgency-related violence last year was more than twice as high as the country's soldiers and police combined, according to government figures obtained Thursday by the Associated Press.
The Iraqi civilian death toll for 2005 was 4,024, according to figures compiled by the Health Ministry. The toll for the first two months of this year already is 1,093.
1,695 police and soldiers were killed last year, according to figures compiled by the ministries of Interior and Defense.
Most of the victims -- 1,222 -- were from the ranks of the police.
In other developments:
Gunmen attacked the disabled car of Iraq's top Sunni politician Thursday, killing one bodyguard and wounding five after the Sunni leader sped away in another vehicle. Thirty-eight other people died in a new round of violence.
In an attempt to avert attacks during the Muslim day of prayer, the government announced a one-day ban today on private vehicles in Baghdad and its outskirts.
The country's political crisis deepened as Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari vowed to fight a move to deny him a second term.
