Former Taliban official released in Kabul

KABUL, Afghanistan, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- A renowned leader of Afghanistan's ousted Taliban was released from U.S. custody after two years, news reports said Wednesday.

Former Taliban Foreign Minister Mullah Wakil Ahamd Mutawakil, who was captured by U.S. troops in the southern city of Kandahar soon after the collapse of the Taliban regime, was set free on Tuesday, Mohammad Anaf, an official of the Kandahar provincial government, told the Xinhua news agency by telephone.

Mutawakil, one of a few moderate and well-educated members of the Taliban leadership, had been the foreign affairs adviser to Mullah Omar, the movement's supreme leader.

He had been detained for two years at the Bagram airbase, the U.S. military headquarters in Afghanistan, after surrendering himself to U.S. soldiers in Kandahar, the Taliban's stronghold, when the city fell to U.S.-led coalition forces.
