Afghan Candidate Is Killed; 3 Americans Are Wounded
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

KABUL, Afghanistan, Aug. 28 (AP) - Gunmen suspected of being Taliban rebels killed a parliamentary candidate on Sunday in the wake of an attack on a United States military convoy that wounded three Americans, the authorities said.

The Americans were attacked Friday as they patrolled about 25 miles east of Kabul, a military statement said. An attack helicopter went to the site, but the assailants had fled.

The wounded soldiers were in stable condition after being evacuated to Bagram, the main United States base in Afghanistan, about an hour's drive north of Kabul, the capital, the statement said.

Attacks on the American military so close to Kabul are rare, and the assault on Friday occurred less than a week after a roadside bomb there blew up near a convoy of United States Embassy vehicles, wounding two American staff members.

Afghanistan has had a surge in attacks in the last six months by rebels believed to have been led by the Taliban, the country's former rulers. More than 1,100 people have been killed. The insurgents have said they want to subvert legislative elections on Sept. 18.

In the latest attack directly linked to the elections, gunmen ambushed Adiq Ullah, a parliamentary candidate, on Sunday as he was driving in Oruzgan Province, killing him and wounding two others in his vehicle, said Jan Mohammed Khan, the provincial governor.

He said he believed that the Taliban were responsible for the attack but that the killers escaped.

Including the attack on Sunday, four candidates and four election workers have been killed, and several election offices have been attacked by rockets.
