Mullah Wakil Abdul Muttawakil, the foreign minister in the ousted regime, was said to have been released from Bagram air base, the US military headquarters, two days ago after 18 months in detention. Relatives claimed that he had gone home to Kandahar, in the south of Afghanistan, but confusion surrounded the reports. Col Rodney Davis, the US military spokesman would not confirm any release, and referred journalists to the Afghan authorities - a comment suggesting that Mullah Muttawakil may no longer be in American custody. But a spokesman for the Afghan foreign ministry said he was not aware of Mullah Muttawakil being sent home, and President Hamid Karzai denied it outright.
