Governors warn that state drivers licenses costs will soar under new law

DES MOINES, Iowa At Virginia Governor Mark Warner's final meeting as head of the National Governors Association, members will take up a controversial issue today in Iowa.

Many governors -- Democrats and Republican alike -- are worried about the cost of imposing new restrictions on driver's licenses.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff is due to meet with members of the N-G-A today in Iowa. He'll face a crowd of political leaders concerned about the cost of new security measures.

Governors say the REAL I-D Act passed last month will force motor vehicle offices to operate like the F-B-I. The federal law requires states to verify license applicants are American citizens or legal residents.

Arkansas Republican Mike Huckabee says, "It's outrageous to pass this off on the states."

Iowa's Democrat Tom Vilsack says the new rules will "drive the cost of driver's licenses for ordinary folks through the roof."
