No sooner had Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts announced that he would explore seeking the Democratic nomination than Internet muckraker Matt Drudge reported that Mr. Kerry spends $150 to get his hair cut. Mr. Drudge backed off his story slightly Tuesday, reporting that Mr. Kerry actually was getting a cut rate (so to speak) of $75 from Washington hairbender Isabel Goetz. This resulted in a gender-equality backlash, inasmuch as Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., spends $150 to get her hair cut by the same Ms. Goetz. Equality in haircut prices is one of the lesser-known, but still rankling, issues for some feminists who also resent having to pay more at the dry cleaner for fewer total square inches of fabric. At least with hair one can make the argument for higher prices based on total hair mass and stylistic rigor. And so we're off and running. Mr. Kerry has thoughtful positions on many issues, but on Day One of his campaign, it was his fabulous head of hair that made headlines. Can Democrats support a man who spends $75 for a haircut? Can feminists support a man who gets a break that women don't? Let the record further show that President George W. Bush spends $30 every two weeks to have his hair cut by Zahira Zahir, an Afghani immigrant, who also cut the presidential hair of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. She comes to his place, rather than having him visit her salon . . . ((ITAL)in the Watergate complex! Democratic mudslingers, take note.
