In 1978, George W. Bush made his first run for public office, seeking the open 19th Congressional District seat in west Texas that included his hometown of Midland. But he was defeated by Kent Hance, who successfully painted Bush as a wealthy outsider from the East, stressing Bush's background at Yale and Harvard.
