France 'sought union with Britain'
POSTED: 6:58 a.m. EST, January 15, 2007

LONDON, England (AP) -- France's government proposed forming a union with Britain in 1956, and also discussed joining the Commonwealth, the BBC reported Monday.

Citing documents in the National Archives, the BBC said French Prime Minister Guy Mollet discussed the possibility of a merger between both countries with Prime Minister Anthony Eden.

That discussion came on September 10, 1956 when Mollet visited London, but Eden rejected the idea of a union, the BBC said.

At the time, France was smarting over the loss of the Suez Canal and by Egyptian support for separatists in Algeria, and was trying very hard to get British assistance in responding, the BBC reported.

A document dated September 28, 1956 records a conversation between Eden and Sir Norman Brook, the Cabinet secretary, about a French proposal to join the Commonwealth.

Eden, the document said, recommended that the idea be considered.

The document added that Mollet "had not thought there need be difficulty over France accepting the headship of her Majesty (Queen Elizabeth II)."

The discussions came to nothing, and a year later France was one of the founding members of the Common Market, the forerunner of the European Union. Britain was not among the original members.

According to the BBC, the documents were declassified about 20 years ago, but had not been noticed until now.
