But in fact, the crucial, cynical, realpolitik balance-of-power deal with Stalin to divide spheres of influence in Central Europe was made not by the liberal FDR but by the heroic, British conservative Churchill -- a revered republican icon to this day -- the previous fall on a visit to Moscow.
Churchill himself told in his memoirs "The Second World War" how he scribbled down his suggested division of spheres of influence in the Balkans on the back of a napkin at a Moscow banquet and passed it over to Stalin, who enthusiastically agreed.
