Bomb Kills At Least 10 in Moscow

MOSCOW — A female suicide bomber killed herself and at least nine other people near a subway station today in a powerful blast that also injured at least 51 people, authorities said.
Witnesses said the woman had appeared intent on entering the station, "but when she noticed police officers checking documents and searching bags near the entrance, she turned around — and a bomb went off at this very moment," Interior Ministry spokesman Valery Gribakin said.
More than an hour after the blast — which also destroyed two parked cars and shattered the station's windows — some bodies could still be seen covered with blankets and lying in pools of blood on the pavement.
The incident near the Rizhskaya subway station triggered a massive traffic jam on the north side of central Moscow that delayed ambulances carrying the wounded for as long as two hours, the Russian news agency Itar-Tass reported.
The blast came one week after two Russian airliners that took off from Moscow crashed nearly simultaneously, killing all 90 people on board, in what authorities said were apparent terrorist attacks using explosives.
Two Chechen women — or else other terrorists using their passports — are the prime suspects in the airliner crashes, authorities said.
The women lived together in Grozny, the capital of Russia's war-torn republic of Chechnya, the newspaper Izvestia reported Monday. They were seen two days before the jet crashes on a bus in the company of two other women who also were their roommates, and investigators had expressed concern those women might be in Moscow with the intent to carry out terrorist attacks, the newspaper said.
