A car-bomb blast destroyed a Russian military hospital near Chechnya, killing at least 20 people, according to emergency officials and Russian news agencies.

At least 100 wounded people were in the hospital at the time of the blast in the town of Mozdok in the North Ossetia region, said Boris Dzgoyev, the regional Emergency Situations Minister.

Dzgoyev said the explosion was caused by a car bomb. But Interfax, citing unnamed hospital officials, said a truck packed with explosives crashed through the hospital gates, killing at least 20 people.

Rescue teams were evacuating survivors from beneath the wrecked building in the town, which houses one of Russia's biggest Caucasus military bases, a duty officer of the local administration said.

"Ruins are all that remain of the hospital," Interfax quoted a military spokesman as saying earlier.

Mozdok was the base for many Russian troops when they poured back into Chechnya in 1999.

It has rarely been touched by the violence in the rebellious neighboring region, but it was the scene of a suicide bombing two months ago when a woman blew herself up and killed 18 people, mainly military pilots, on a bus on the outskirts of the town.
