Police identify bomber in Egypt attack Last Updated Tue, 26 Jul 2005 13:41:25 EDT CBC News
Investigators in Egypt have identified one of the people they believe was responsible for last weekend's bombings at a Red Sea resort.
At least 88 people died and more than 200 were injured when suicide bombers attacked a car park, a market and a hotel at Sharm el-Sheikh on Saturday.
On Tuesday, police said DNA evidence identified the man responsible for the hotel bombing as Youssef Badran.
Police described Badran as an Egyptian Sinai resident who had ties to Islamic militants.
So far, police have detained 140 people for questioning.
In other developments on Tuesday, an Egyptian diplomat said Pakistanis were not involved in the bombings.
"No Pakistani national was involved in the terrorist attacks that rocked Sharm el-Sheikh late last Saturday," the Egyptian Embassy in Islamabad said in a statement.
The statement comes after reports Monday that police were circulating photos of five Pakistani men at checkpoints in and around the resort.
Foreign Affairs has warned Canadians to avoid any unnecessary travel to the Sharm el-Sheikh area and has told Canadians already travelling in the region to avoid crowds and demonstrations.
On Sunday, Egyptian tourism workers and foreigners marched through Sharm el-Sheikh to show their concern and solidarity with the victims.
