10 Britons still missing after Egypt blasts Mon Jul 25, 2005 7:55 PM BST
SHARM EL-SHEIKH (Reuters) - Ten Britons are missing after bombs rocked Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Saturday, a British Foreign Office spokesman who travelled to Egypt told Reuters on Monday.
"The indication is highly likely that they have been involved as victims. We cannot say for certain they are fatalities. They are highly likely to have been caught up in the blast," the spokesman said.
The British ambassador to Egypt, Derek Plumbly, told Reuters that authorities had compiled the list of 10 based on lists from tour companies and from families whose relatives have not been in contact since the bombings.
"These are people whose situation gives us cause for concern... But it is not a matter of firm identification," he added.
At least 64 people, mostly Egyptians, were killed in Egypt's worst attacks since 1981, Minister of Tourism Ahmed el-Maghrabi said on Monday. Officials at Sharm el-Sheikh International Hospital on Saturday put the number of dead at 88.
Seven non-Egyptians, including two Italians, one Briton and a Czech, were also killed in the attacks when three blasts ripped through hotels and shopping areas. The nationalities of the others were not clear.
All of about 200 people injured in the explosions have been identified, leaving few possibilities to explain the fate of people who were in the town and appear to have disappeared.
