Murder Spoils Bush and Blair’s Plans

Istanbul, TURKEY, July 19, 2003 - British scientist Dr. David Kelly, identified by the British Defense Ministry as the source of leaked intelligence to the British Broadcast Corporation (BBC), was found murdered yesterday. The BBC confirmed that Kelly was the source for its stories claiming that intelligence reports about Iraq were exaggerated and distorted by Tony Blair's chief advisor, Alistair Campbell. British Police declared that a body found in Kelly's Oxfordshire neighborhood was that of the scientist, who had failed to return home after going out for a walk the previous afternoon.

The murder could be the start of tough days for U.S. President George Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who have both been under public pressure over the issue of intelligence reports on Iraq. As well, both countries are facing military difficulties in Iraq, where guerilla attacks on their forces have been increasing lately.

British Sky TV claimed that the murder of Kelly, a microbiologist and former United Nations (UN) weapons inspector, could cost some government members their posts. Sky stated that Campbell had no choice but to resign, and Defense Minister Geoff Hoon, who publicly named Kelly as the BBC's source, was at risk.
