Sister of Iraqi vice-president shot and killed Last Updated Thu, 27 Apr 2006 05:33:10 EDT CBC News
The sister of Iraq's new Sunni vice-president was shot and killed Thursday in Baghdad, a day after her brother called for an end to the insurgency.
The shooting comes the same day three Italian soldiers and a Romanian soldier were killed when their military convoy was hit by a bomb.
Mayson Ahmed Bakir al-Hashimi, whose brother Tariq al-Hashimi was named vice-president on the weekend, died as gunmen in a car sped by her home in southwestern Baghdad. She was married with children.
Her bodyguard was also killed in the drive-by shooting.
Two weeks ago, Tariq al-Hashimi's brother Mahmoud al-Hashimi was shot while driving through eastern Baghdad.
On Wednesday, Vice-President al-Hashimi called for Iraq's Sunni-dominated insurgency to be quashed by force. He made the call as a sign of unity with his Shia and Kurdish parliamentary colleagues.
He made the comments the same day he met with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who were in the country to meet with Iraqi government officials.
Italians, Romanian killed
Italy's government said the three Italian soldiers and Romanian soldier killed Thursday died when a bomb exploded near their convoy in the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah.
Italian news agencies have reported that more soldiers were injured in the blast.
More than 2,000 Italian troops are stationed in the city, which is about 350 kilometres south of Baghdad.
