The CH-46 Sea Knight came down in water near the city of Karbala, 68 miles (110 km) southwest of Baghdad, Pentagon sources said. According to unconfirmed reports, a fifth marine who attempted to rescue the helicopter's crew also drowned. There was no indication that the helicopter had been hit by hostile fire, US sources said. The twin-engine aircraft came down in a canal or waterway. "A fifth marine observed the crash, went in to try to rescue them and didn't survive either," a US defence official, who asked not to be identified, told AFP news agency in Washington. "We just have early reports. There are still a lot of questions," the official added. The CH-46 has been in service since the 1960s, typically ferrying troops and equipment to and from the front line.
