The U.S. navy F/A-18C Hornet was shot down April 2 near Karbala, south of Baghdad, as it was conducting bombing runs from the U.S. aircraft carrier U.S.S. Kitty Hawk. The pilot of the single-seat jet, Lt. Nathan White, 30, of Mesa, Ariz., was killed in the incident. At the time the jet was shot down, Central Command said an Iraqi surface-to-air missile had hit the jet.
