Explosions Rock Baghdad Arms Dump, Dozens Killed, Injured
VOA News

Huge explosions have rocked Baghdad, as an ammunition dump blew up on the outskirts of the Iraqi capital, killing and injuring dozens of people. The U.S. Central Command says American troops guarding an Iraqi ammunition dump came under attack Saturday, and a device fired by the attackers set off the explosions. Central Command said six bodies have been recovered, but Iraqi medical sources give a much higher death toll. At least one U.S. soldier was among the wounded.

Angry residents blamed U.S. troops for the explosions, and threw stones and fired at U.S. soldiers who tried to treat the wounded. The blasts destroyed some homes and seriously damaged others. The explosions continued for nearly an hour, and fires were still burning at the dump several hours later.

Coalition troops have been struggling to bring security to the Iraqi capital since Saddam Hussein's regime collapsed earlier this month. They also have been rounding up senior figures from the former government.

U.S. officials say the former Iraqi intelligence chief, a man with possible links to the al-Qaida terrorist organization, was taken into custody Friday. U.S. authorities said Farouk Hijazi was captured near the Syrian border, hours after former Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz surrendered to U.S. officials.

Farouk Hijazi was a top-ranking Iraqi intelligence agent when Iraqi operatives tried to kill the first President Bush 10 years ago in Kuwait. He is also believed to have met with Osama bin Laden in 1998.
