| Daniel pipes board directors usip ADC Action Alert: Pipes Nomination Vote Next Wednesday, 23rd Monday, 21st, is National Call-in Day to Oppose
The nomination of Daniel Pipes to the Board of Directors of the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) will be voted on by the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions next Wednesday, July 23. This Committee usually approves uncontroversial nominations without debate or a hearing, and it appears that this vote too will occur without a debate or a hearing. However, Daniel Pipes‰?ª nomination should be rejected because of his numerous bigoted statements against Arabs and Islam and his hard-line opposition to just peace in the Middle East based on the exchange of land-for-peace and the concept of two states, Israel and Palestine, endorsed by President George W. Bush.
ADC is making Monday, July 21, a NATIONAL CALL-IN DAY TO OPPOSE THE PIPES NOMINATION. You can contact your senators online at http://capwiz.com/adc/issues/alert/?alertid=1876506&type=CO
Other committee phone numbers and contact information is included below.
WHY DANIEL PIPES SHOULD NOT SERVE ON THE BOARD OF THE US INSTITUTE FOR PEACE:
* PIPES IS OPPOSED TO PEACE: "Palestinians need almost as much to be defeated by Israel as Israel needs to defeat them." (Jerusalem Post, April 25, 2001)
"The implication is clear: if Israel is to protect itself, it must achieve a comprehensive military victory over the Palestinians‰?|" (New York Post April 2, 2002);
"History teaches that what appears to be endless carnage does come to an end when one side gives up. It appears increasingly likely that the Palestinians are approaching that point, suggesting that if Israel persists in its present policies it will get closer to victory." (‰?ÏThe Only Solution Is Military,‰?? New York Post, February 25, 2002)
"Israel needs to take more active steps...Bury suicide bombers in potter's fields rather than deliver their bodies to relatives (who turn their funerals into frenzied demonstrations)‰?|Permit no transportation of people or goods beyond basic necessities. Shut off utilities to the PA...Raze the PA's illegal offices in Jerusalem, its security infrastructure and villages from which attacks are launched." (The National Post, July 18, 2001)
"Encourage Israel to appear fearsome." (Jerusalem Post, December 6, 2000)
* PIPES PROMOTES HATEFUL BIGOTRY AGAINST ARABS AND MUSLIMS: "The presence and increased stature, and affluence, and enfranchisement of American Muslims...will present true dangers to American Jews." (Address to the American Jewish Committee, October 21, 2001)
"I make the same point respectively to audiences of women, gays, civil libertarians, Hindus, Evangelical Christians, atheists, and scholars of Islam, among others, all of whom face 'true dangers' as the number of Muslims increases..." (The Nation, November 11, 2002)
"Western European societies are unprepared for the massive immigration of brown-skinned peoples cooking strange foods and maintaining different standards of hygiene...All immigrants bring exotic customs and attitudes, but Muslim customs are more troublesome than most." (National Review, 11/19/90)
"Iranians and Pakistanis, to take two groups of non-Arabs, are at least as widely conspiracy-minded and as anti-Semitic as, say, Tunisians and Kuwaitis." (Commentary, September 1, 1999)
"...black converts tend to hold vehemently anti-American, anti-Christian, and anti-Semitic attitudes." (Commentary, June 1, 2000)
"‰?|a well-established tradition of American blacks who convert to Islam turning against their country." (Jewish World Review, 2002)
"Muslim population in this country is not like any other group, for it includes within it a substantial body of people‰?|who share with the suicide hijackers a hatred of the United States." (Commentary, November, 2001)
* PIPES‰?ª ‰?ÏCAMPUS WATCH‰?? IS A BIGOTED ATTACK ON ACADEMIC FREEDOM "Middle East studies in the United States has become the preserve of Middle Eastern Arabs, who have brought their views with them. Membership in the Middle East Studies Association (MESA), the main scholarly association, is now 50 percent of Middle Eastern origin." (From the original mission statement, About Campus Watch, now edited out)
"‰?|academics seem generally to dislike their own country and think even less of American allies abroad‰?|"(Ibid)
"Campus Watch will henceforth monitor and gather information on professors who fan the flames of disinformation, incitement and ignorance." (Ibid)
