Report: States left with $29 billion bill for unfunded federal programs
Undated-AP -- A new report says the federal government is increasingly passing big-dollar programs, and sticking the states with the tab.
The National Conference of State Legislatures report says states will have to pay at least 29 (b) billion dollars this year for federal programs and initiatives.
The biggest of the costs come from special education requirements, prescription drugs, and President Bush's new No Child Left Behind education law.
The Congressional Budget Office doesn't quite agree with the conclusions. It found that just two laws from the last seven years force states to pay more than 50 (m) million dollars.
