Dems tout 'Defending Democracy' By Judi Brinegar Staff Writer, The Courier-Tribune
ASHEBORO - The Democratic Party of Randolph County hosted a "Defending Democracy" banquet Friday evening at The Exchange in Asheboro.
Approximately 85 people turned out to hear guest speakers Will Jordan, candidate for the 6th Congressional District Seat, Charles Moss, N.C. Senate Candidate in District 29 (which includes Randolph and a portion of Montgomery county) and Jerry Meeks, first vice chair of the State Democratic Party. Justice Sarah Parker of the N.C. Supreme Court was unable to attend due to illness.
Jordan, who is a Greensboro attorney, is running against Republican Howard Coble, who is seeking his 11th term in office.
"Simply put, I'll tell you where I stand," he said. "We need to end this war as soon as possible and we need to enact a universal health care plan. I also want to see the Bush tax plan rolled back. We are the richest nation in the world and 40 percent of his tax cuts went to the richest one percent of the people in this country."
Jordan would also like to see Congress enact some more stringent environmental rules and repeal the Patriot Act.
"Section 215 of the Patriot Act was enacted following 9-11 and such as it is, the FBI has the power to spy on ordinary people in this country and do not have to show probable cause," he said. "The whole thing scares me to death."
Jordan would like to see No Child Left Behind program in public schools eliminated.
"All of the focus of No Child Left Behind is on test scores in math and reading and not on educating our children," he said. "We also need to get rid of the voucher system and support our public schools.
"We may not be able to do this all at once but we need to start now."
Meeks, a graduate of Duke University and the University of Notre Dame, encouraged local Democrats to speak out and make a change for a better government
"It amazes me that the battle being fought by our forefathers is still being fought today," he said. "If used right, government can be used to build a better democracy. This president (Bush) is putting the interest of a wealthy few over the safety of all people and believes that governments exists only to protect a few privileged, chosen few."
Meeks also said that every vote is going to count this election year.
"The polls in the presidential race are dead close," he said. "We can not take anything for granted. We have to make sure every vote in the state counts. The worse thing any of us can do is wake up on Nov. 3 and say 'I could have done more.' "
Hal Walker is the chairman of the Randolph County Democratic Party. He also encouraged those present to go out and talk to area people about the election.
"We, as a party, need to seek what is lost and, right now, we are on the brink of being lost forever," he said. "Now is the time for us to put forth our best effort. We need to fight and refuse to give up our place in this world."
