Blair under pressure over Iraq troop deployment
British Prime Minister Tony Blair is coming under increasing pressure to explain the reasons for redeploying British troops to assist the US military in central Iraq.

In a stormy question-and-answer session in Parliament, Mr Blair has said his Government has not yet decided whether to send 650 troops from their bases in the country's south-west to relieve the US forces.

The Opposition Conservative Party leader Michael Howard says he is concerned the British troops are going to be dragged deeper into the conflict.

"Given that there are 130,000 American troops in Iraq, why is it necessary to take 650 men from the British forces in southern Iraq and redeploy them further north?" he said.

It has been suggested the deployment is little more than a show of unity, to bolster President George W Bush before next month's US election.

But Mr Blair insists the request has nothing to do with US politics.

"It is a request that has been made by the American military to our military and they are considering it on a purely operational basis," he said.
