WHO: Bird Flu Cases in Turkey are Overblown By Cihan News Agency, Geneva Published: Wednesday, February 01, 2006 zaman.com
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported the number of bird flu cases in Turkey may actually be12, not 21.
In London, tests performed on samples taken from patients suspected of having the bird flu confirmed only 12 as the deadly H5N1 virus. The other samples were diagnosed negative.
Lain Simpson, WHO communications officer, said they are trying to reveal the genetic structure of bird flu found in Turkey.
Claims denote the bird flu virus found in Turkey and that found in South Asia are different. With the diagnosis of the12 patients infected with H5N1 virus in Turkey, the number of patients infected with bird flu worldwide rose to 160.
On the WHO website, it was reported that the number of patients who died as a result of bird flu, including the last four deaths in Turkey, climbed to 85.
Simpson said they would send a group to Northern Iraq to investigate the possibility that the death of a 15-year-old girl on January 17 was bird flu related.
