Shots Fired Outside United Nations
By Dafna Linzer Associated Press Writer Thursday, October 3, 2002; 1:46 PM
UNITED NATIONS –– A man fired a gun into the air outside the United Nations on Thursday and was taken into custody. There were no reports of injuries.
The man, who wearing a blue, long-sleeved cotton shirt, walked inside the gate of the U.N. compound brandishing a pistol and fired it five times into the air, said Michael Hovey, who works at the United Nations and witnessed the shooting.
Hovey said he did not see anyone hurt by the shots, but Diplomatic Security quickly descended onto the outside entry of the United Nations and took the man away in handcuffs.
Hovey works for a nonprofit organization called The Hague group for Global Peace and was in the U.N. building on Thursday for meetings.
He described the handgun as a silver-covered pistol. He said the man was also carrying leaflets. It was not clear what the leaflets said.
It was not clear how the man got past security.
