Bush to Meet With Canada's Harper and Mexico's Fox in Cancun
March 3 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. President George W. Bush will meet with Canada Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Mexico President Vicente Fox at the end of this month in Cancun, Canadian officials said.
The three North American Free Trade Agreement partners will discuss security and border issues, among other topics, Canadian Foreign Minister Peter MacKay told reporters today in Ottawa. A full agenda hasn't been set, he said. The leaders will meet for two days beginning March 30, Dimitris Soudas, a spokesman for Harper, said today in an e-mailed statement.
The meeting will be Harper's first with both Bush and Fox since being elected in January. Relations between Canada and the U.S. have soured in recent years because of a trade dispute over softwood lumber. The U.S. has imposed an average tariff of 8.7 percent on Canadian softwood lumber since 2001, saying Canada unfairly subsidizes domestic lumber companies.
At the last meeting of the leaders 11 months ago in Crawford, Texas, Former Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin failed to convince Bush and Fox to change the way the three countries resolve trade disputes.
