Northrop says 9 of its staff killed in Saudi blast
Reuters, 05.13.03, 6:35 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. defense contractor Northrop Grumman Corp. said Tuesday nine employees, including seven U.S. citizens, were killed in Monday's suicide bomb attack at its Vinnell Corp. subsidiary in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

A Vinnell Arabia residential and office facility was one of three compounds attacked, said Northrop in a press release, which did not reveal the names of those who died. Two of the nine who died were citizens of the Philippines.

Fifteen workers were hospitalized, with two in serious condition, said Northrop, which added that members of dependent families living within the Vinnell compound escaped without harm.

"We are deeply shocked by this senseless attack and mourn the loss of our colleagues," Donald Winter, corporate vice president and president of Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, based in Reston, Virginia, said in the release. "We continue to work closely with the U.S. government to secure the safety of all company employees and their dependents in Saudi Arabia."

At least 29 people, including as many as 10 Americans, died when suspected al Qaeda suicide bombers shot their way into housing compounds in the Saudi capital Monday, in the first big, coordinated attack on Americans since the Iraq war.

Assailants drove, guns blazing, into three guarded housing compounds for expatriates shortly before midnight and set off huge car bombs. The attack came hours before Tuesday's visit to Riyadh by U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell.

The death toll may be as high as 91, said Vice President Dick Cheney in an address to the Hudson Institute.

Vinnell Arabia is under contract to the U.S. Army to provide training services to the Saudi Arabian National Guard. The company employs about 300 U.S. citizens and another 500 people from various other countries.
