U.S. Sources: N.Korea Says It Has Nuclear Weapons April 24 - WASHINGTON (Reuters) - North Korean officials have told the United States that Pyongyang has nuclear weapons, Bush administration sources said on Thursday.
The sources, who asked not to be named, said North Korea did not discuss testing nuclear weapons during the talks between U.S., North Korean and Chinese officials in Beijing, which ended a day earlier than expected.
"They said what we always knew -- that they do have (nuclear) weapons. That doesn't shock us. We've been saying that. Now they said it," said one administration source, who asked not to be named.
"They never used the word testing. ... We're still translating but it's being overplayed a bit," he added.
On Thursday morning, Secretary of State Colin Powell said the talks had ended a day earlier than expected and he warned North Korea that the United States would not be intimidated by what he called "bellicose statements."
Powell also said Washington had not taken any options off the table -- a diplomatic phrase meaning that military action had not been ruled out -- and that it was looking for ways to "eliminate" the threat posed by any North Korean nuclear weapons program.
"The North Koreans should not leave the meetings in Beijing, now that they have come to a conclusion ... with the slightest impression that the United States and its partners will be intimidated by bellicose statements or by threats," Powell said in a speech.
Powell said there might be additional bilateral talks between the United States and China or between China and North Korea but a Bush administration source said it was not clear that those bilateral talks would take place.
"I don't know that they'll even meet. It's late at night. They will be getting up and meeting. It essentially concluded the dialogue. So ... the talks didn't break down. the talks ended, they ended early. Everybody got their say," said the source.
