Bush Urges Israel Abide by Road Map on Settlements
Mon Apr 11, 2005 01:16 PM ET

CRAWFORD, Texas (Reuters) - President Bush told Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon on Monday he was concerned about West Bank settlement growth and urged him to stick to his obligations under the U.S.-backed "road map" peace plan.

"I told the prime minister of my concern that Israel not undertake any activity that contravenes road map obligations or prejudices final status negotiations," Bush said at a joint news conference with Sharon after their talks at the president's Texas ranch.

"Therefore, Israel should remove unauthorized outposts and meet its road map obligations regarding settlements in the West Bank," he said.

In response, Sharon said Israel would fulfill its commitment to remove unauthorized Jewish outposts and would meet all its obligations under the road map.

Bush also reaffirmed that Israel could keep major West Bank settlement blocs.
