US Says Opposes Killing Arafat After Sharon Comment Fri Apr 2, 2004 11:47 AM ET
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States repeated on Friday that it opposes the assassination of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat after Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon appeared to threaten the long-time Palestinian leader.
"Our position on such questions -- the exile or assassination of Yasser Arafat -- is very well known. We are opposed and we have made that very clear to the government of Israel," U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage told reporters. It was not clear whether Washington had repeated its view to the Israeli government after Sharon's latest comments.
Sharon made his most explicit threat yet against Arafat in newspaper interviews 10 days after Israel assassinated Hamas leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in a helicopter strike in Gaza. He also directed the warning at Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, leader of Lebanon's Hizbollah guerrilla group.
"I wouldn't suggest either one of them should feel secure. I wouldn't propose that any insurance company give them coverage," Sharon told Israel's Haaretz daily. "Anyone who kills a Jew or harms an Israeli citizen, or sends someone to kill Jews, is a marked man. Period."
Asked if Washington had repeated its opposition to killing Arafat to the Israeli government after Sharon's comments, Armitage replied: "I have been in a meeting all morning so I didn't see these remarks until I was walking down. ... As a general matter, there is no question the government of Israel knows our view on this matter."
