Expelling Arafat would be "terrible mistake": European commission
The European Commission said Friday that the expulsion by Israel of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat would be a "terrible mistake" - and reiterated that it would maintain its contacts with him.
"We believe that would be a terrible mistake that would have serious consequences across the whole region," said Diego Ojeda, a spokesman for EU external relations commissioner Chris Patten.
Asked whether the European Union will maintain its policy of holding contacts with Arafat - counter to American calls for the Palestinian leader to be isolated, the commission said: "Nothing has changed.
"Mr Afafat remains the democratically-elected president of the Palestinian Authority. As such we will continue with our contacts with the Palestinian Authority at all levels, depending on circumstances," he said.
Israel's security cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, gave its approval in principle to Arafat's forcible expulsion late Thursday, blaming him for being an obstacle to peace efforts, but did not set a date for any action.
