The explosion occurred in front of the Grand Hibhib mosque in the volatile Diyala province, according to the provincial joint coordination center. Al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq, was killed June 7 in an airstrike in Hibhib, 35 miles northeast of Baghdad. A car bomb exploded near a market and a gas station in the northern city of Basra, killing at least five people and wounding 15, said police Capt. Mushtaq Khazim said. Nobody claimed responsibility, but sectarian tensions have worsened in predominantly Shiite Basra, Iraq's second-largest city some 340 miles southeast of Baghdad, with mostly Shiite militias attacking Sunni Arabs and battling each other. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki declared a state of emergency in the once peaceful, oil-rich city late last month, but it has failed to quell the violence.
