Baghdad Bomb Kills at Least 25, Including Children (Update1)

July 13 (Bloomberg) -- At least 24 civilians, many of them children, and one U.S. soldier were killed when a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb in a crowd of children surrounding a U.S. military Humvee vehicle, military and government officials said.

The car-bomb attack took place today at 10:50 a.m. local time in east Baghdad, killing one American soldier and wounding three others, the U.S. military said in an e-mailed statement. At least 24 people, ``many'' of them children, were also killed, Zahraa Hamid, a translator at the Iraqi Interior Ministry's press office, said in a telephone interview from Baghdad.

``There were a lot of children in the area when a suicide bomber drove up and set off the explosives,'' Sergeant 1st Class David Abrams, a U.S. military spokesman, said in a telephone interview from the capital. At least seven children were among those killed, he said, adding ``there may be more.''

The administration of transitional Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari has struggled to contain insurgents across Iraq who have killed hundreds of civilians and members of the security forces since his cabinet took office in May.

Seventeen civilians were also wounded in the explosion, Hamid said, adding that the casualties included people of different ages.

The blast also set a nearby house on fire, the military said in the statement. Iraqi police and fire-fighters responded to the scene, and U.S. forces helped evacuate some casualties to an American Army hospital, according to the statement.

The U.S. soldiers killed and wounded in the blast were with the military's Task force Baghdad unit, the military said, without naming them. No further information was available.
