The blast outside the Baghdad Hotel in the Iraqi capital killed at least seven people. Iraqi officials say many others were wounded. The bomb exploded just before 1000 UTC. Reports say the tall hotel, on the east bank of the Tigris River, is used by U.S. security personnel and other Westerners. An eyewitness says a speeding car crashed through security barriers outside the hotel, then exploded with a blast that was felt across a large area of central Baghdad. Flames erupted, a cloud of thick, black smoke rose high into the sky and parts of a building closest to the explosion collapsed. Sirens wailed as ambulances, fire trucks and other emergency vehicles rushed to the scene. Three U.S. helicopters circled overhead, and heavily armed American troops and Iraqi police sealed off the area. The explosion shattered windows of nearby buildings and shook the Palestine Hotel, blocks away, where many foreign journalists reside. Sunday's blast was the ninth bomb attack in Baghdad in less than two months since a suicide bomber crashed a truck laden with explosives into the United Nations headquarters compound in Iraq, killing 22 people, including the head of the U.N. mission, Sergio Vieira de Mello. Another suicide car bombing four days ago killed at least 10 people at a police station in a Shi'ite section of Baghdad. Some information for this report provided by Reuters, AP and AFP.
