WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An F/A-18C Hornet single-seat fighter bomber went down in Iraq just before midnight on Wednesday and U.S. forces continued intense efforts to find and rescue the pilot, U.S. defense officials said.

"They are still conducting search and rescue operations," said one official.

Two U.S. television networks, Fox News Channel and ABC News, first reported the incident and said the Hornet was shot down over southern Iraq by a surface-to-air missile.

U.S. Central Command issued a statement a short time later confirming the Navy fighter jet, which is based aboard the USS Kitty Hawk aircraft carrier in the Gulf, was down, but giving no details about the location or the fate of the pilot.

In its release, the U.S. Central Command forward headquarters in the Gulf state of Qatar said an investigation was continuing and the pilot's name would not yet be released.

"While the coalition does not discuss the details of ongoing recovery operations, we are committed to accounting for all coalition personnel," it said in a statement.

It said the plane came down at 11:45 p.m. Iraq time (3:45 p.m. EST).

The first U.S. strike-fighter, the Boeing Co . -built Hornet was designed to operate in all weather conditions, carrying out both bombing missions as well as fighting enemy aircraft on the same missions.

The twin-engine aircraft, which costs $29 million apiece, was heavily used during the first Gulf War, and has flown many sorties during the current war in Iraq. It can carry a variety of different munitions, including the AIM 9 Sidewinder missile and the Joint Stand-Off Weapons.
