"The Marine was manning a .50 calibre rifle on top of a seven-ton truck when the vehicle passed under and apparently snagged low-hanging power lines," it said in a statement. The soldier was from the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force it said, adding that the exact cause of his death in Monday's accident was being investigated. Early on Thursday, U.S. Marines were tightening their grip on Nassiriya, 375 km (235 miles) south of Baghdad, after apparently breaking Iraqi resistance from Fedayeen militia over the past week.
