U.S. military officials said they had not targeted the electrical system. Reuters reporters heard sustained barrages of artillery and anti-aircraft fire on Thursday evening from the southwestern outskirts toward the airport. U.S. officials have said their troops are preparing to fight for control of the airport. "The power went off first on the west bank of the river and then on the eastern bank as far as we can see," Reuters correspondent Khaled Yacoub Oweis said from a hotel in the city center. © 2003 Reuters
