The official said there were no reports of American casualties in the ground engagement in which Iraqi forces fired on U.S. troops with rocket propelled grenades. "There was a ground engagement with the Seventh Cav. near An Najaf, not up by Karbala (as initial TV reports suggested) ... Apparently ground forces tried to hit some of our guys with rocket propelled grenades," he said. "They did damage a couple of pieces of our gear but we've had no reports of casualties on our side. But apparently there are some reports that we may have killed quite a few of them. Estimates differ. Some say 200-300. Some say 150," he said. He also said some have suggested as many as 500 Iraqis were killed. © 2003 Reuters
