U.S. And Iran Will Open Talks To Stop Iraqi Violence March 16, 2006 8:00 p.m. EST

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - The United States says it is preparing to talk with the Islamic Republic of Iran in an effort to halt the growing wave of sectarian violence in Iraq.
According to White House spokesman Scott McClellan, the Bush administration is giving U.S. ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad, the authority to talk with Iran about the Iraqi issue, while keeping Tehran's nuclear ambitions off the table.
The move comes only days after President Bush declared Iran was providing "material aid" to insurgents in Iraq.
McClellan says, "This is a very narrow mandate dealing specifically with issues relating to Iraq." As for the nuclear situation, "That's a separate issue from this."
The move comes after the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, says Iran is ready to open direct talks about Baghdad.
